Preparation No fasting required. Stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection.

The Alpha-Fetoprotein blood test can be used to screen or monitor treatment for certain types of cancer, especially cancer of the stomach, liver, testicles, ovaries, or pancreas. High levels of AFP may also indicate brain tumors, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, or renal cell cancer.
An AFP may be ordered when cancer is suspected due to the presence of lumps or masses. The AFP is also used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for cancer of ovaries, testicles, and liver.
Please note that this test is not intended for use as a prenatal screening to assess risk for various birth defects.
