B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a protein that is produced in the heart.  During heart failure when the heart is stretched and working hard to pump blood, the protein is released in the blood.  BNP is produced primarily by the left ventricle of the heart.  It is associated with blood volume and pressure and with the work that the heart must do in pumping blood throughout the body.

The BNP is ordered when symptoms of heart failure are present.  These symptoms may include:

·         Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath

·         Fatigue

·         Swelling in the feet, ankles, legs, abdomen

The BNP can be retested over time to monitor the effects of therapy of an individual that is being treated for heart failure.

High levels of BNP indicates that a person has some degree of heart failure, the higher the level, the worse the damage.

Normal results indicate the symptoms are not related to heart failure.
