One of the most important minerals found in the body is calcium.  The body depends upon calcium to sustain healthy bones and teeth.  Calcium also plays a part in making sure that your heart, muscles, and nerves are working correctly. Often, people do not show symptoms until the levels get extremely high or extremely low.  

This test may be performed when signs and symptoms are displayed such as:

  • Bone diseases
  • Abnormal vitamin D level
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Overactive thyroid gland
  • Taking too much thyroid hormone medications
  • Certain cancers including breast, lung, kidney, neck, and multiple myeloma
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Intestinal absorption issues
  • Disorders of the parathyroid glands

Higher than normal level may be due to:

  • Bed rest for an extended period of time
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Consuming too much vitamin D or calcium
  • Certain cancers, multiple myeloma, and T cell lymphoma
  • Metastatic bone tumor
  • Infections causing granulomas such as tuberculosis, fungal and mycobacterial infections
  • Paget disease
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Tumors that produce a parathyroid hormone-like substance
  • Taking medications such as lithium, tamoxifen, and thiazides

Lower than normal level may be due to:

  • Intestinal absorption issues
  • Kidney failure
  • Liver disease
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Deficiencies of albumin, magnesium, or vitamin D
  • Pancreatitis
