A CCP Blood Test is commonly ordered along with or following a Rheumatoid Factor Test to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis, as well as evaluate its severity and prognosis. The presence of Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide (CCP) antibodies, when evaluated in conjunction with clinical and other laboratory findings, can help diagnose RA. Approximately 70% of RA patients are positive for anti-CCP IgG, while only 2% of random blood donors and control subjects are positive. The test can also be used to predict the development of RA in patients with undifferentiated arthritis.

General interpretation of CCP Blood Test results can be summarized as follows:

  • Positive CCP antibody, positive RF: Patient likely has RA, which may become more severe

  • Positive CCP antibody, negative RF OR low levels of both: Patient may have early RA or may develop RA in the future

  • Negative CCP antibody, positive RF: Clinical signs and symptoms are more important in diagnosis

  • Negative CCP antibody, negative RF: Patient is less likely to have RA
