A partial thromboplastin time (PTT) exam will assist in determining the capability of your body to form blood clots. After the effective and timely completion of a series of occurrences known as the coagulation cascade, a blood clot forms in which coagulation factors are activated one by one.  A sufficient amount of each coagulation factor must be present for the method to operate efficiently, and each must function correctly.  

Symptoms that could lead to this test being ordered are the following, but not restricted to:

  • painful or swollen joints
  • easily bruised
  • blood in the urine
  • frequent or heavy nosebleeds
  • heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
