Overview
Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measures the percentage of hemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose attached to it, reflecting average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. Because red blood cells live about 3 months, HbA1c gives a longer‑term view of blood sugar control rather than a single “snapshot” like a standard blood glucose test. Higher levels usually indicate higher average blood sugar, which can signal prediabetes or diabetes and increased risk for complications such as eye, kidney, or nerve problems; lower levels within the target range suggest better‑controlled blood sugar. Clinically, it is widely used to help diagnose diabetes, monitor how well treatment is working, and guide changes in medicines, diet, or lifestyle in people with diabetes.

- Iron‑deficiency anemia and some chronic kidney or liver diseases may modestly affect HbA1c values.
